Joshua Fit For Battle? What on earth is that supposed to mean? I guess it makes it easier for nerdy screamo-violence kids to type the band name into a search engine and find their website (note: I just did a search using “exact phrase’ and there are 336 matches – woah!). After all, typing in Orchid is more likely to find you a page on flowers, so you may as well pick something strange.
Pshaw! Enough of that timewasting (as usual), what can I tell you about this 7″? Well, it’s four songs, and it does a great job of making a chaotic, spazzy noise in just the way you’d expect. It’s that harsh, violent stuff that you know and love (or despise). Very typical screamo riffage out of the books of Orchid or Song of Zarathustra, out of breathe crazy-man screams, and the occasional mellow out into an emo twinkle. Or even start with one. “2:52″ (innovative, all the songs are named after how long they are), kicks off as if it’s Christie Front Drive, or some other classy, indie emo, then it drives into the screams again. I like. Portrait-esque I think is the best description available, show-casing the bands melodic capabilities brilliantly. As does “2:13″, which has a long build up before piledriving into manic, flustered emo violence of the highest calibre. Side B has better tracks than Side A I reckon.
Insert artwork featuers a skull, and pictures of babies in a rocking chair. Yes, I think we can safely say that JFFB are screamo, emo, and have a silly name. I reckon this is a very good 7″, and you’ll want to pick this up if you are into the style, but aren’t the sort of person who goes now round saying: “NOT ANOTHER FUCKING BAND THAT SOUNDS LIKE ORCHID AND ALL THAT STUFF ON LEVEL PLANE AND WITCHING HOUR!!!”.
