This has to be one of the most enjoyable UK releases from for a while. Two bands from the north, who both specialise in gritty, noisy rock music. Nice packaging too, which features a nice booklet with dogs(?) on it.
Having seen J*R live some time ago, this is the first time I’ve actually heard them on record. They serve up two tracks of garagey rock, a bit like a greasier, lo fi Jesus Lizard without the tortured vocals of David Yow. The best track being the second, ‘Executive Decision’. Solid, although the real gold is found on Kill Yourself’s side. I’d had people tell me that this band sounded TOO much like Shellac for their own good. They do sound like Shellac, but Kill Yourself seem to be a lot more urgent and less precise. Plus, they seem to rock out a little more. Like Shellac thrown into a pan with the Jesus Lizard (again), with Ian MacKaye on vocals. It’s good! The riff on ‘The Artist’ just rocks so hard, and both tracks are helped by the excellent prodcution.
Only 300 copies, I’d buy this. It’s good.
