This excellent album uses all the right fingers when it comes to pushing my musical buttons. It’s got the dirty sludginess down to a fine art, an engulfing weighty sound topped off with a Buzzoven-esque vocal style, but it also has this mathematical element to keep things interesting, snapping you out of your stupefied bonged-out torpor with several slaps of near-jazz fretwankery. These songs are drawn out beautifully using a hypnotically repetitious approach that never gets boring, and the three culprits just sound like they’re behaving in good, scattered, deranged manner that is clever without being “clever-clever,” as well as just plain fucking heavy! Proof positive that if you bother to look further afield than the Southern Lord roster, there’s a wealth of great, heavy material out there.
