Kevorkian - Relief Through Scream - CD (2003)

Labels: Hopewell
Review by: Kunal Nandi

The spirit of Refused is alive and well in the Czech Republic! Mentioning Refused and the Czech Republic in the same sentence may have already made your brain say “sod this”, but let’s face it, Refused were a hell of a lot of fun (in a credible Rage Against the Machine kind of way), and the Czech Republic has always offered A LOT in the way of quality rockage. Kevorkian aren’t mere copyists however – they bring a lot more to the table. Unfashionable heavy metal influences rear their head more than a few times (quite obviously on a secret cover of “Breaking the Law”), and the lyrics are introspective and intelligent. The (Locust-esque)song titles especially are brilliant – “Pulling The Shaving From Your Ass With The Help Of A Magnet”, “On Oxford Shoes Thrown Up On By A Preppy Asshole” – I don’t know how much of that is down to a lack of understanding of the English language (highly doubtful) or whether they just want to prevent people shouting out requests during shows (likely), but either way, thatsa spicy meatball! You should track this one down.
