Kill Yourself - Soft Touch Of Man EP - CD (2003)

Labels: Gringo
Review by: Kunal Nandi

I may be a little impartial here, as I am putting out a 7″ with this band on soon(ish), but that’s not stopped me before!

Endless lazy references to Shellac and The Jesus Lizard abound with this band, but what does that actually mean? Sure, the guitar tone has that same cheese-wire-and-razorblades feel that Albini has. Sure, everything is built on the rock-solid foundation of an immense rhythm section. Sure, you have rude words yelled at you by a madman. But having those things can simply add up to a big pile of noise, signifying nothing, going nowhere…

What I think you also get from KY, that makes them very special, is a seriously organic feel. These guys want to bring the noise AND dance like hell. After a couple of slightly uninvolving openers, the songs come slamming in thick and fast. They have a curiously British slant to things – I’m reminded of Ligament at their peak (with less of the funk). KY have a brave disregard for melody, but aren’t afraid to lighten things up at times. Metal for indie kids? Maybe… I’d
rather call it great music.

Kill Yourself are one of the best bands in the UK. You may quote me, if you haven’t already.

You can also get this on something called a “record” from Obscene Baby Auction Records.
