Larsen - Play - CD (2005)

Labels: Important
Review by: Chris Bress

Larsen are a group who are incredibly capable of creating dark rock music with a drone-like electronic underbelly. The attention to detail and their anonymity are the only links I can find to their dedication of this record to the mighty Autechre; although I’m sure there’s an Autechre lick on the intro to the first track. Larsen play what some people would call “œpost-rock”, and I can see them sharing a stage with a group like Godspeed! You Black Emperor, but unlike many “œpost-rock” bands they manage to bridge all sorts of different sounds and influences whilst still sounding like a competent group. Their affinity to Michael Gira is also a given, their sludge works do at times remind me of later, more melodic, Swans releases. Paolo Dellapiana’s accordion playing, when not droning away in a Popol Vuh fashion, brought the Black Heart Procession’s goth rocking to mind. This is a highly enjoyable record and when ordering it you should check out many of the other fantastic Important Records releases.
