Lightning Bolt - Tour - 7

Labels: Load
Review by: Andy Malcolm

Hmm, I have a feeling that Lightning Bolt are going to become one of those ultra-hip bands that I am supposed to like, but really I can’t get into this 3 song 7″ at all. I love the messy vinyl packaging and everything going on with the design, but the music is absolutely dire. A = “Conan”. Some guy is playing a repetetive drum beat and cymbals over and over again, there is 1 note being played, whilst someone speaks into a tube in a silly voice. He is saying something like: “I need a cooker hood”. Or something. Then it all goes rumbly and they play faster and instead of playing one melodic note over and over, they play this great big fuckoff booming chord over and over. Or something. They actually get a bit of variation going at one point, everything is screechy feedback and falling about all over the place, if only they played like that all the time. Arty fart noise-core that goes on for longer than necessary. “Behemoth” is rawly recorded and worse. Instrumental, drums being smashed hard, a few noises, and some guitar chicanery. Finally we have “Into the Mist” which starts out with some seriously weird noises, produced by what instrument I have no idea. Then it turns into this raging art-violence (re: Black Dice) track with super-fast drums and more insane noise. Best thing on here.

Apart from “Into the Mist”, this is wholly unappealing to me, I guess if you fancy some art damaged hardcore (i.e. if you’re into stuff like Black Dice and Arab on Radar), you should check these guys out. Mastered by Neil Burke. Told you they were hip.
