Ah, the band with the funny name that I saw the other week at the Factory have sent me a tape, which is nice of them. Very nice of them in fact, as this is neato. I’m afraid I won’t be able to liken it to the bands that it is probably most influenced by, but I can tell you what it sorta sounds like instead.
First song “Selfish Killers, Patriotic Whores” starts off all blippy like weirdy Joan of Arc, then it becomes this incessant, slow burning track, with waves and waves of guitar and the occasional bursts of drumming, building and building, introducing new elements as it goes a long, with strange underlying electronic kind of noises. At times it gets louder and the whole thing crashes about, before calming down. It is at least one hundred hours long and sounds a bit like an intro, but remains really quite cool.
Then there is “Mules For The Cinema” which absolutely knocks me over with its fabbiness. Although David from the band says he hasn’t heard them, this to me sounds a little like Christie Front Drive playing a bit of Mineral. Quite beautiful really, lightly twinkling and once again building up to louder bursts of noise. After a while it all goes pretty and quiet, and totally CFD-esque when the barely audible vocals flutter into the picture, woah. When I first heard this part I wasn’t prepared, and just stood staring out the window for the duration. And then it’s over. That one was a bit good.
What a cool proper introduction to an interesting band, someone should let them do a 7″, forthwith.
