A few years back this terrible racket used to come out of Canada. It was hardcore in origin, but uglier, gloomier and more oppressive. Thick and poisonous, shot through with metallic influences but never in an objectionable way. Maybe it was influenced by the likes of Rorschach and Acme, but I don’t know about that. The perpetrators included Uranus, One Eyed God Prophecy and Drift. But they all died and nothing sprang immediately from the frozen soil on which they trod. Recently it seems that the relay baton has been passed safely into European hands, with the likes of Shikari and the Barnhouse Effect stepping up to bat. But the Lost Kidz are trying to take it back. Canadian style. And here’s how they do it:
Five politically-charged songs usher forth like a whirlwind of glass and grey ash, almost Neurosis-like in its stifling quality. An avalanche of tumbling guitars reigns supreme over thunderous drums and desperate, harrowed screams. On occasion the rage trickles away, leading into quieter, brooding moments that never soothe but only serve to build tension and suggest further violence on the horizon, before another onslaught hits like a cinderblock to the solar plexus.
None of this is particularly new or innovative of course. And if you’re happy with spinning the OEGP lp over a couple more times rather than checking out something new then I guess I’d understand. But if, on the other hand, you like to hear this sound played well, with passion and honesty then you should certainly be donning your deerstalker and investigating the whereabouts of this fine little slice of plastic.
