Luciano and Matthew Johnson - Alpine Rocket - 12

Labels: Perlon
Review by: Chris Bress

Its pretty confusing but I’m pretty sure one side is a collaboration between the two and the other a solo Luciano (or Lucien n Luciano) cut. The Luciano track is a great drum work-out which has this great beat which sounds like Pan Sonic gone samba with added house thump over the top. The dubs are somewhere deep under the beats but are enough to make this piece sound great. Although this hasn’t got the beautiful melodic flavour of some of his other releases it still stands up as a great 3am party track.

“œAlpine Rocket”, the collaboration, is pretty good too. It’s got a lot of ideas going on but not so much as it being a case of too many cooks. It kicks off with a micro beat and old school acid keyboard workouts, but it descends into total weirdness with synths and cracks all over the shop. It’s a melting pot of modern techno. When the rolling beats kick in Im taken back to when I saw the one earring wearing producer at Stealth (an experience that was both hilarious and fantastic in a Jean Michel Jarre kind of way). The esoteric vocals drop in halfway through and give it an eerie edge, and made me think of the Lost Boys soundtrack (but maybe that was just the single earring?).
