Mad at the Sun - Hot Snow Falling - CD (2003)

Labels: Boss Tuneage
Review by: Andy Malcolm

Well this band is way before my time. Way way way. I was like 11 when they were existing. But Boss Tuneage has dug up 10 songs by them and put it on a CD. Which is nice.

First thing I noticed is that they have the singer who is in the band Annalise, that would be Ed. I put Annalise on one time and nobody came, I was right gutted. Anyway, Ed has Very distinctive vocals, he’s a good singer chap. The music that MaTS indulged in is a fairly basic form of post-hardcore or something, from the late 80’s. Resplendent in it’s basic production where everything sounds so simple and hidden behind the singing. If re-recorded these days this would probably sound quite immense, as it has a lot of good elements and the songs ain’t bad at all, just the rather wafer thin sound strips them of all the power that they probably possessed live. Some of this stuff is really interesting and enjoyable, such as “This Could Be” which seriously reminds me of something with it’s hyperactive guitar work that buzzes along quite frenetically.

10 tracks in total, and it’s not shabby at all for a practically unknown UK band from 15 years ago. It’s aged pretty well and although the production is limp, it doesn’t ruin it, unlike a lot of other UK 80’s stuff. Worth investigating if you like to delve into your punk rock history, and it’s readily available. Solid work.
