Mara'akate - A Significant Portion of Their Discography - CD (2003)

Labels: Heroine Records
Review by: Alex Deller

Twenty-four songs documenting, variously, demo, 7″ and split releases by this now defunct screamo band. Just under fifty minutes worth of churning, turbulent noise that comes in dissonant, fragmented bursts with unintelligibly screamed vocals that beg the question why some sort of lyric sheet wasn’t included. I bet these guys would’ve fucking ached to have been on Witching Hour back in the day, but it seems they missed that boat and carried on regardless. It’s not bad at all, and the quality gets better and better as the CD forges on. Personally I just seemed to have reached burn-out with this kind of thing. I bought the Usurp Synapse releases as they came out, and nowadays stuff needs that extra bit of “˜oomph’ to have me raving about it. As it stands, this is just ok and not much else. Competent, but their particular rocketship falls short of grazing the face of god.
