A vaguely interesting story behind this one: Chicago’s Miasis had the music down, but no vocals. They emailed the mighty Sean Ingram, of Coalesce fame, on the offchance that he’d do it, and on the strength of a demo, he eventually flew up and did it. Told you it was vaguely interesting. Maybe it’s the way I tell them.
Listening to this three-tracker, which I wish was longer by about nine songs, I am hardly surprised that Ingram took part. Miasis pay a large debt to the painfully heavy stylings of Coalesce themselves, especially during their “Give Them Rope” (the first album) era. Very heavy, very discordant, rhythmically challenging – very Coalesce in short! Mind you, that could be due to Ingram’s presence. He has a unique voice – a throaty, horrific, amazing roar that instantly makes you think of Coalesce.
Well, that’s not totally true. The second song, is quite a happy number, noticeably without Ingram’s death-bringing vocals which helps lighten the mood, and has acoustic guitar and noodly bass. It would have been interesting to see what Ingram could have done over this.
Also, it’s a shame there are no lyrics, as Sean Ingram was always an exceptional writer.
An interesting experiment that paid off then! I look forward to hearing which vocalists Miasis go with in future.
