Is there something about Pennsylvania indie emo-rock bands that makes them put summer months in their titles? Is there an album imminent from Philadelphia’s Purple August Cupcake? Hmmm?
2 songs here. And you can see why they put out a split single – similar styles, and they come from the same state. The Carson’s effort (“Lilac Morning”) is as good as any of their tracks from the “Wound Up Down South” EP, so if you liked that then you might want to get a listen of this as well. Either that, or this serves as a good introduction to the band. Its the same sort of rocking indie music with emo vocals and cool, slightly complex guitars. The Jazz June, though, are a newbie for me. This track, “Bleach In Your Eyes”, kind of reminds of Chamberlain in a way – particularly the vocal style at the start. Like MCJ, its melodic indie rock but perhaps heavier guitars here. Great sounding chorus too, but I can’t figure out what he’s singing.
Strange thing though, I had to line up the needle on the player manually, as it kept buggering up when I just pressed play. Hohum. Only other gripe here is that with good emo music I always want to hear a full album of the stuff, one song just whets my appetite and then its gone. Still, if you’re unaware of either of these bands, then get this and see whats going on. Oh, and get a load of that sissy title eh!
