Um, these boys are weird. I mean, go check out their website. The intro page is a picture of a middle aged guy running around in his pants. Then there are the CD inlay pictures, one of which depicts a pre-school kid (probably a band member in his youth) making the devil sign. Cool! When I have kids I’m gonna get them to do this. Next, there’s the band name – an apparently random string of 3 words. And finally, the band are obsessed with wafflehouses. Yeah. Wafflehouses. Still, crazy is cool, so heyho, lets review.
Hmm, I am being put off by a sound emminating from outside my window. Someone appears to be listening to an 80’s rock compilation at high volume. The likes of Bryan Adams are ruining my thought processes. It is particularly bad now, as I know the song currently playing, but I can’t think of who its by. Don’t you just hate that?
Well, the song playing now is “Wound Up Down South” by Mid Carson July. And it starts off with a sample out of some film, and it mentions wafflehouses. Then they play music. Well blow me down. If it isn’t some emo, you’d think I’d be sick of it by now, I know you probably are. This band took a while to worm their way into my “I like this” stakes, but they are now firmly entrenched there. Each of the tracks are energetic and bouncy, not forgetting highly tuneful and with great, emotive vocals. The distro list I ordered it from suggests they sound a bit like Braid, and I think they do a little, but MC July are more, well, pop and more straight ahead – they don’t seem to mess about quite as much as Braid do on the 3 songs I’ve heard by them.
And because MC July mix pop up with big rocking melodies, I guess it never was in question that I wouldn’t like them. Lyrically they are pretty cool too, particularly on the excellent “Delicate Matters” which was originally written for the ‘Mayfly Benefit Compiliation for Battered Women’, which should give you some idea as to the subject matter.
So all in all, damn fine, and another band you’d do well to check out if you’re into this kinda music.
