Mineral - Jimmy Eat World - Sense Field - split - 7

Labels: Crank
Review by: Andy Malcolm

Woohoo, 3 band split emo single. Thats what I like to see. 2 bands I am minorly familiar with, and Jimmy Eat World being a new one on me.

I think I need a Jimmy Eat World album. Their song here, “Secret Crush”, is simply stunning. It’s more of that awesome emo-rock, Get Up Kids style. Distressed sounding, totally emotive vocals, great big ole melodies to die for – this be the whole package. Too good for mere words.

As for Sense Field, they are about the only emo band you have a chance of finding stuff by on the shelves of Virgin Megastores for some reason. I’ve had a bit of trouble getting into them before, but “Every Reason” rocks totally in a similar fashion to their other stuff that I’ve heard and liked, perhaps slightly poppier.

And finally to Mineral, a band who have split, but have a final album out soon. From what little I know, they normally deal in complex, melodic emo rock, but “Crazy” is *slightly* different here. It’s a cover of the old country song, and to be honest, as it creeps a long at a snails pace, it is the most depressing thing I have ever heard. The singer sounds truly, truly down, and, well, to say it is moving is perhaps an understatement. It’s almost painful to listen to, especially the screeching guitars that are liberally sprinkled throughout. Look, if you’ve just been left by your boyfriend/girlfriend, I’ll send you a copy of this song on tape and you’ll never want to leave your bedroom again.

This is even on pink vinyl, as if to emphasise that people reared on macho hardcore shouldn’t go anywhere near it. Acquire forthwith.
