When I first put this CD on, within the first thirty seconds it was saying to me…….absolutely nothing at all, because CD’s can’t talk! But I was thinking, this really sounds like Neil Young. Laid back countryish stuff, but I was soon to learn that this stupidly named band sound nothing like Neil Young, and it was just those first few seconds at the start. Lulling me into a full sense of security eh! You sneaky devils. It even has those weird country echoey sounds that you only hear on country records. And man I’ve heard them all. Well, not really. Although I heard one this time when i was 11, it was about a one legged man or something. Funny as! Anyways! Namelessnumberheadman (jeez), what are they like? They are not like Neil Young. Though if I listed everything they were not like, we’d be here for ever so I think that’s a bad approach. And like a maroon, I misplaced the promo sheet which told me what to write about the band. The one time it may have come in handy. The problem is, they are pretty original and unique, blending in some electronica, spacey stuff, indie rock and post-rock into their approach. Post-indie-space-rock-ica? Does that exist? Probably not. I like the music though. “An Unproven Theorem” rumbles for 4 minutes, giving me tingles of instrumental Antartica stuff, all stark and over-bearing, before tumbling into sparse piano and downbeat vocals. At other times there are more instruments, such as on “In the Throes of Giving Up” where they have cellos and strings. I also love the way they work electronica blips, whirrs and sounds into things. Gah! I just find this a very hypnotic and compelling listen, I tend to drift in and out at times but whenever I realise I am listening, I discover that I have a great CD on my stereo. It is bundle of different styles that have been clevely weaved together to make them fit – it never sounds forced or stupid, just good. I dunno, mix American Football, Antarctica, and a bunch of other stuff I can’t figure out and you have a vague approximation.
So, difficult to pin it down and give it the words it deserves but it is really something I enjoyed an awful lot. If you are a little adventurous with your indie listenings then I would recommend you give this one a perusal. If you do, and end up writing a better review than this one in your spare time (shouldn’t be hard), please send it to me so I can put it on this site. Thanks!
