Nao Tokui - s/t - 12

Labels: Progressive Form
Review by: Chris Bress

Progressive Form is fast becoming one of my favourite electronic labels. Once you actually find their ultra limited records (apparently due to the high cost of releasing records in Japan) you will kind of know what to expect, and with a fine roster such as theirs I always find that taking a chance is going to pay off.

This 12″ from Nao Tokui (who I have absolutely no previous knowledge of whatsoever) is totally mint. It kicks off with a really minimal techno track, no established beats just the odd squeak and crunch but expertly combined. It’s a great way to kick off this ep. The second track is great almost house-like electronics. It has such a strange feel to it that leaves one longing to be listening to it on a late night train or whilst wondering the streets. It’s claustrophobic feel benefits it in a way that it sounds unlike many other artists, in fact the only artist I can think of (and only one track by him – not his ambient or more techno stuff) is Susumu Yokotas re-working of that Him track on their remix 12″.

Fascinating stuff from a great label.
