Scandinavia. Despite living in the crappest part of it for two years (Viborg in Denmark), I have a soft spot for Scandinavia. My favourite “rock” band ever come from Norway, Bergen’s Motorpsycho, and of course Sweden didn’t slack with Abba and Refused. So these Swedish lads have my ear, despite their rubbish name. After a couple of listens what can i say. Well, I want to like it, and in part I really do. It’s basically alterna/ college rock with a touch of an alt country feel. The thing it reminds me of most is someone like Superchunk playing the Jayhawks, but the guys voice is so prominently mixed and he has such a cracked yankee accent (odd for a Swede), that it does kind of get in the way of my enjoyment. If only he had a touch more of his native tongue coming through, that’s the thing I love about Motorpsycho, especially when the guitar player sings like the Swedish chef off the muppets. This record just feels a bit forced, so for every good college rock guitar twinkle and banjo picked country flavour there’s this guy doing his best John Cougar Mellencamp impression in your ear. Which is offputting, the very definition of a mixed bag.
