Occam's Razor - Letters From The Slave Auction - 7

Labels: self released
Review by: Andy Malcolm

It’s easy to get jaded about bands. With all of them playing the same thing one after the other and whatnot. Occam’s Razor sound not that much different to any one of the bands I madly pursued the records of when I first heard and was blown away by this whole screamo malarkey back in 1999, and on this 7″ they play a whole bunch of utterly chaotic and unrelenting spazz-mess. Of course these days it doesn’t sound quite so bewildering and shocking as it did to me 4 ½ years ago. But when the band puts so much effort and passion into it’s destruction I still appreciate it. Especially because they have gone to the trouble of packaging the record in a manilla envelope with a patch on the front, put the words in a cute little booklet and written some thoughts. These are all good things, and help reassure me that not all screamo bands have abandoned DIY in favour of slick production and glossy record layouts. Occam’s Razor are old skool. As mentioned earlier, the music is traditional “” excitable bursts of super-fast guitars, blended up with occasional gorgeous twinkles or semi-subtle moments where the music gets quiet and slows down and sees the multiple vocalists continue their non-stop roared attack. The screaming is actually some of the best I have heard in ages in this genre, the kids really have their Star Wars trash compactor yells down pat. And I never fail to appreciate screamo vocals done in this fashion. Now that I am listening to the record properly I am becoming of the opinion that this is pretty fucking awesome, and definitely the best stuff in this genre for quite some time. If you miss when screamo was passionate and real, get this record. Maybe it’ll do the same for you that it does for me.
