Last week I saw Off Minor play at the Norwich Ferryboat. And they had this one song where the singer Jamie was describing that it was about a friend of his who was on a life support machine, and how it had been turned off. And then they played the song. As they broke into the first few notes, a large white moth flew up seemingly out of nowhere past Jamie and on into the rafters. It made the hair on the back of my neck stand on end, how incredibly strange. That song is on this split, and it is entitled “Staring Down the Barrel of Limited Options”. It is a pretty incredible song, my favourite one that they played live and my favourite on this record too. It is a beautifully rendered mid 90’s emo style effort that ponderously twinkles for a long time, with distant anguished vocals contrasting quite spectacularly. There are occasional noisier moments where it explodes then quietens down, it’s very Bob Tilton-esque, and it blows me away. Totally fantastic. The other track is “In S.L.” and it is a chaotic emo track with dual screamed vocals and jazzy rhythms and breaks that remind me of when Braid were dead mathy. Good stuff.
Life Detecting Coffins put out an uber weird cd which I never quite got my head around, luckily the lengthy song on here is much more straightforward and comprehensible for my feeble capacities to get to grips with. It’s a loping indie rock track that plods it’s way along with almost monotone sung vocals. The pace changes a couple of times then suddenly explodes into a crazy emo finale that is way Native Nod what with the abrasive guitars and desperate screaming. Great way to finish off yer song I reckon.
