You can bet these guys weed their pants when they heard Slint was reforming to play ATP. Oil Red O though
dispense with the words, and just get down to playing intricate post-rock, with lots of slithering guitar and
tension. They avoid the lack of words on each track with lengthy samples that kick in. Otherwise this is
instrumental noodlism that would appeal to folks who enjoyed the Gringo back catalogue of yore and probably many
bands from the US (Chicago or something), that dabble in the fine art of playing instrumental songs well. Oil Red
O manage to avoid my primary GAH! against instrumental bands, that being: “is it just a bunch of songs that they
couldn’t be bothered to sing over?”, as the music stands up on it’s own two feet and doesn’t need some dude
bellowing or whispering or whatever.
Difficult to know what else to add – I guess if you appreciate the world of instrumental post rock and want to
check out a band that does it pretty good, then go hunt this 7″. Good uns!
