Initially I thought this CD was a tribute to long time Buffalo Bills place kicker, Steve Christie (and who better a person to dedicate a record to?), then I realised it was a different spelling. My bad. But I would like to think this is the kind of music that Steve Christie listens to anyway, when he is psyching himself out to go and kick a game winning field goal in sub-zero temperatures at Orchard Park. Olo or is it O1O or is O|O or is it OIO (oi oi!) play chilled out jazz stuff with an indie rock edge, and it is really suiting my mood this Sunday afternoon. They throw in some beats and a little piano or keyboard and rumbling bass and I really enjoyed listening to this one. Very Chicago-ey, and mostly reminds me of Aloha or Tortoise. In fact, it’s kind of like the Aloha LP on Polyvinyl, which would have been a good record if it wasn’t for that steenking vibraphone they insisted on polluting their songs with. Occasionally OlO have vocals, and their singer reminds me of Brandon Butler when he sang for Farewell Bend. Overall it is pretty much easy listening and very melodic, just lulling you into a smiley mood. If I didn’t have any other records to review, I could probably listen to this for the rest of the evening, when it gets dark and stuff.
It’s only 4 songs long, but it clocks in at over 30 minutes so you’re getting quite a lot of jazzbang for your buck. That sounds dirty. Anyway, very good EP!
