One Car Pile Up - Police Academy - 7

Labels: Crackle Records
Review by: Andy Malcolm

Well, I think this purchase now means that between us, me and Ian own every Crackle release going back to #14, which isn’t so bad is it? And we’re only missing #14, #13 and #12 back to #9!

Production is a bit iffy on first song up here, vocals sound a bit muffled, and guitars a bit ‘cloudy’. Not as spot on as you’d expect something like this lightning pop punk, Fat Wreck style, to sound. I’d be the first to say I normally don’t go for this kind of thing, but OCP have that little something that reels me in and makes me like this release. Hooks sir, hooks. That is what “Something to Hyde” is full of – explaining why I like it. Tap that toe! Added metal too. But not too much, which is good.

On the b, 2 more songs. “Ice Blue Sea” carries on the pop punk / melodic hardcore sound, with big bludgeoning drumming, and buzzing guitars. Make the devil sign bub! And the kids go wild… Then we have “3 Cheers For Liberty”, subtitled “[hip, hip fuck off]”. Indeed. It’s still fast, it still has bits of metal, and it’s not as good as the other two songs at all, despite another catchy chorus. Never mind.

Pretty good then. All that remains for me to say is that if I was in a punk band, I would call it “Pile On!” in honour of that event that happened during every boys school years when someone falls over during a football match at lunchtimes. Anyone wanna join?
