Here’s a random something from my pile up things sent for review. I listened to this a couple of times when I got it if I remember correctly, and quite liked it at the time. Kicking it back on now I can see why. This band is weird. Firstly they have an early 80’s post punk sound mixed up with a DC-ish type groove that really rocks along, a squelchy bass sound blends in with frollicking guitars and exhuberant vocals. It sounds like the sort of thing that should be on Discord to me, as it’s catchy and is very much in the vein of that labels direction.
And then, they change all of a sudden. Track 3, “Sex Face”, is an instrumental bubbles along and throws some fun keyboard in to the mix, gets very cheesey and 80’s after a while though! Then “(Havin’ A Blast In) Co-op City” is kind of a strange indie-pop-dance number, with messed up vocals and lots of bouncing keyboard and drum beats. Totally different from the first two tracks! Very 80’s, but not in an annoying or cliched way.
Then finally we get track 5 which is back in the quirky indie rock mode. No vocals for two minutes, but it buzzes merrily along and eventually the vocals kick in, sounding completely different from the other tracks. The bass again gets this one going and will make people get up and dance. This is a long track, and it has hand claps on it. Can’t complain about that.
The production is a little rough round the edges, but regular reader(s) know that works like a charm for myself. And they have this overwhelmingly danceable feel, very rhythmical and enjoyable, I should reckon they are a dashed fine live band. Kind of schizophrenic too, which is never a bad thing. Worth investigating.
