Review by: Luke Younger

I’ve been waiting for a release from Pale Horse for a while now, and it’s good to see that one has finally come along. I don’t want to go into too much detail about the packaging and artwork of this release, but I feel that a lot of effort went into it so it deserves a mention. Even if no effort went into it, it still looks nice anyway.

So for those not familiar with Pale Horse, their double bass-guitar-pounding-drummer-screaming-frontman liveshow has been entertaining hardcore/metal/filthy kids for a good couple of years now so it’s good to see that they’ve finally unleashed a release. And what a release this is! Rather than pummel you into submission at every possible opportunity, Pale Horse spend some of their time held back. A lot of what makes it so effective isn’t just in the attack, it’s in the build up. The ghoulish low-end rumble of feedback, acoustic instruments and the psychotic breathing of frontman Seedi, help this record gain a lot of its power to great effect. “Gee, That Ain’t Swell” proves that Pale Horse are not just at the forefront of current great UK bands, but at the forefront of their genre as well. I think it’s also nice how they could have quite easily rounded up a half arsed 7″ release when they first started, but held out to release something a little more special. A well constructed and interesting record.
