Pinback have always been there, plodding along, writing really good pop records. They’ve released a few duffers but usually the proper records are great. They are great for those long Summer car rides and it looks like they know that from the title, even though I don’t know what “abaddon” actually is. Summer in a bad one? Abandoning Summer and it being a bad one? Who knows? I always wondered how Rob came up with such great hooks, especially with him being in so many bands. Unless this is a real grower though I think he’s running out ever so slightly of tunes. The first track is ace, its got the perfectly recorded Modest Mouse indie pop sound down to a tee. “Syracuse” is also a great twiddly pop song with great almost Beach Boys harmonies that brought a smile to this face. It is pretty much downhill from there though, although there are a few other ace ones but just nothing as good as anything off of “Blue Screen Life” or “This Is A Pinback CD”.
If you are new to Pinback and love good indie rock then you’d probably be into this, it is just I couldn’t get into this like the others.
