Pink Lincolns - Background Check - CD (2005)

Labels: Hazzard Records
Review by: Andy Malcolm

According to the suitably pink coloured bumf that comes with this CD, Pink Lincolns have existed since the mid 80s. The old gits. This 32 track CD runs for 80 minutes, which is beyond the listening capabilities of the likes of me. I’d have to be obsessed to bits with a band to listen to them for 80 minutes non stop, especially one that cranks out pretty standard punk rock fare as the Pink Lincolns do. You know exactly what you’re in for here, the band play snarly vocalled punk rock ditties that generally clock in at more than 1 minute but less than 3. Its all suitably energetic and punkily snotty, the guitars riff away, the drums are pounded and the bass is prominent. Some of the tracks I enjoyed, such as the fast paced blitz of opener “Cotton Mather”, some of it I couldn’t stand at all such as the diabolical “Black Circles” which is drowning in terrible 1980’s production. There are also numerous enjoyable cover versions such as “Heroes” which they bounce through in a fun if not necessarily terribly original fashion, and a predictably snotty romp through the theme from Friends. Some of the best stuff on here is the latest stuff from 2004, although its not exactly moved on that far from their 80s stuff style wise!

I don’t know if this is a good starting point for those looking to hear Pink Lincolns because I haven’t a clue as to how good their other records are. But there is certainly enough material on here that those who appreciate basic and punky punk rock will easily find something to their tastes. More to my tastes though is the snippet of news on a flyer that came with it announcing the imminent release of an Ash County Sluggers cd. Nice!
