Portiswood - Too Punk For Lennons - Tape (1999)

Labels: self released
Review by: Russell Opie

Picked up this five track demo tape at the recent Lovemen gig. Worth a pound, I thought, to check out a local band. This is hardcore! Feisty punk-rock with attitude. First song “Behind Closed Doors” is spoilt by some slightly quirky vocals that detract from the overall effect of the song, as the vocalist sings “Nobody seems to … caaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrre”. If you have heard this song you will know what I mean. Its just plain ridiculous. But the best track on the tape for me is “K” – wow I love this song. Its kind of emotional and has a nice little catchy chorus. Good lyrics too.

“MTV” is highly entertaining and its heavier than the other tracks on here. It takes the piss out of MTV (which is always a good thing, if you ask you me). The more I listen to this the better it gets – shouty, rocking and just a damn fine song. Finally there is a cover of “Young Til I Die”. I haven’t heard the original so I can’t make any comparisons, but this is another awesome melodic hardcore song, that Portiswood seem to be able to do quite well.

So a good effort from Portiswood – in time they could well turn into a very good band indeed.
