Programme - Une Vie - 7

Labels: Fat Cat Records
Review by: Andy Malcolm

Yikes. What the heck is this? I certainly am bereft of the required musical background knowledge to come up with any accurate comment on what kind of sound this French duo is making. Well, on one song anyway. At least on the first side the music is at least a little more familiar to my ears.

Programme is two chaps from the south of France, and this is a new 7″ on Brighton based label, Fat Cat – yes, the label that released the Sigur Ros LP in the UK, how on earth did our crappy little zine wind up on their promo list?! Not that I am complaining, it is awesome to get stuff like this in the mail because otherwise I would likely never get to hear it in my life. Anyway, the first song on this record is intense. Actually that word sums up this release totally. “Une Vie” is darkly brooding mass of tension. It revolves around the same chord being played on the piano and swirling instrumentation, drumming and pulsing drone whilst one of the French guys intones over the top. The intensity swells and they throw in things like a siren buried in the sound. The lyrics are fantastic, about going through life concentrating on all the negatives.

The second track is noisier, scratchy drums and rumbling electronics with effects sprinkled in liberally and two vocalists. The drums aren’t all out fast but they sound like an assault on my ears. Pounding. Dirty. More deep thinking lyrics.

Well, this is a great 7″. I don’t know how I would handle an LP of this sort of stuff, I think it’d fry my brain, but hey. Well worth checking out (though it’s not released for a little while unforunately) if you like stuff that is different, and intelligent.
