Provan - Act Like You've Been There Before - CD (1999)

Labels: Edna
Review by: Andy Malcolm

Provan. Sounds like the medicine we give our family cats to stop them getting fleas. Still, no fleas on this CD, Provan plying you with juicy, melodic pop rock. It fills my criteria for being pop rock that I like in that it has that upbeat, happy-go-lucky, summery kinda feel to it, and also that it would sound perfect on Danny Baker’s radio show, where US pop rock always sounds great, even when it’s by a band that you really shouldn’t like due to ‘credibility’ issues.

Best tracks for me are the opener, “Superbuick”, a bouncy and tuneful pop feast, and “2000 Steps” with it’s great harmonies. Theres a slower tracks that doesn’t grab me so much, that being “Dan Emery Mystery Band”, but when they up the pace I detect a touch of High Back Chairs in their sound, and that’s a good thing in my book. There’s also some nice chunky guitars that occasionally hint at the Promise Ring, but not too directly.

I’ve said it before (probably), but the coolest thing about doing reviews is when people offer to send you their own CD out of the blue, and you’ve never heard of the band, and it turns out to be any good. 6 solid tracks out of New York for the pop fiend in you. Give it a go.
