Punchline - The Rewind EP - CD (2003)

Labels: Fueled by Ramen
Review by: Mark Skold

I hate it when this happens – I get a CD, and I don’t review it for 8 weeks. I have no excuse, particularly as I’m unemployed right now. The hint could be in what’s about to follow…..

Punchline are a recent addition to the Fueled By Ramen roster, and FBR have made a fair racket about them. I don’t really see why, though. Four tracks of Get-Up Kids meets the Impossibles, which sounds happy enough. But it never really gets going.

It’s a neat concept – the four tracks are “Play”, “Rewind”, “Stop” and “Power Off”, and all accompanied on the inlay card with the stereo symbols associated with the function.

The tunes are all pretty average, although some bits are less average and more good than others. “Stop” has a really poppy, singalong finale, which is really cool. On the whole, it’s certainly not hi-fi, which is always nice, but it doesn’t hit very hard.

Rumor has it that their live show is pretty special, so that may be cool, but this one leaves a fair bit to be desired. Oh well, was it worth the wait?
