Pylon - 2400 Volts - CD (2003)

Labels: Jealous Records
Review by: Andy Malcolm

This is probably a couple of years old now, but Pylon are so unproductive that it’s

not particularly an issue. I had the pleasure of enjoying their live show for the

first time in two or three years last weekend and they summarily blew me away with their

hideously bouncy indie rock extravaganza. If I can’t go see Braid or Bob Nanna’s

post-Braid (mostly) solid attempts at continuing his legacy, at least I can go see

Pylon. And on this four track cdep, Pylon crank out songs that are ridiculously indie

rock, and at the same time brilliant. “Yo Yo Blue” (NANNNA SONG TITLE ALERT), “the

Contraption Faction” and “Unstoppable” are the three main songs that combine to lift my

spirits and make me bob my shoulders up and down in a happy fashion. At the live show I would have been seen to hop from foot to foot whilst clapping randomly, turning to my bud Simon and smiling like a lunatic, such was my alcohol consumption that evening. Yet despite my haphazard co-ordination I was truly enjoying what I saw. Probably the best show I have attended in the city of Norwich. This EP translates that well, with stupidly infectious melodies that cruise along at pop-speed. Tunes buzz, guitars crawl into my head and infect it with joyous noises, and slightly imperfect vocals sprawl comfortably alongside. It’s indie rock at it’s very best. If you like Hey Mercedes, you will like Pylon. Right smart!
