Raggity Anne - Only Square People think it's Cool to be Cool - CD (2001)

Labels: Boss Tuneage
Review by: Mark Skold

The first time I listened to this album I thought it was poo. But then I put it on to remind myself exactly why I thought this, so I could write about it for you fine people. But it turns out that I really like it. I must be strange or something, huh?

This is a big-ass, 20 track “greatest hits” complation CD by this band, Raggity Anne, who are British and play infectious punk music. It’s a combination of tracks from 2 other CDs, a 7″ and 4 previously unreleased tracks. Quite the collection for any fan. I don’t know any though, so if you’re out there, I think you should read on….

Imagine a rather lo-fi combination of Screeching Weasel and Dillinger Four, and I’m pretty sure you’re just about there. But the songs don’t lift you up quite as much as Weasel do, and quite frankly, are not anywhere near as supreme as Dillinger stuff is. But the sound is there.

The opener is the title track, and it’s pretty shit hot, as so many openers are. But then it kind of peters out, and turns a little bit average. Some of the tunes, like Table Manners, have that nice punk, yelly edge, and others like My TV Sucks are dumb and irritating. But the nice thing is that the majority of the remaning are very listenable, and indeed quite enjoyable. Particularly for the punky lover, as you and I.

Well, I like it. It’s nothing ground breaking, but I have paid very good money for far crapper stuff. Should the punk-ish pop sound be one you and your tastes agree with, you could do far worse.
