Yay, my first Snuffy Smile 7″, featuring one Japanese band – Wisher. And one American band – Rail. And both are pretty cool. But I know nothing about either band, so this might be a short review for once. Probably not though.
Rail are doing the pop punk trip. They are like Skimmer, but the vocals aren’t so high pitched. Not adverse to throwing in the rock style guitar at all. Dig that solo in the middle of “Damaged Goods”, a song which is just upbeat and has cool harmonies and is a neat listen. “Kill It If I Could” is equally cool. What makes the band all the more endearing is the fact that they mention that both the songs appear on their album – which is only available on cassette tape. Woah!
Not quite sure what is up with Wisher’s first song “Broken Piece of Me”. It sounds like it would be really cool, but the shouty sounding vocals are lost behind a total wall of rocking guitars. There’s a bit of Get Up Kids in there, and a bit of something more indie rock, reminds me a bit of an Acrobat Down song at times. The production is less rough on “I’ll Write You A Love Song”. Very emo type lyrics, looking at the translation here. It’s sort of like the poppier, slower Blew efforts.
Cool beans, if not exactly essential or groundbreaking.
