Rapider than Horsepower - Rapider Than The World - 10

Review by: Alex Deller

And so Rapider tumble into town with their best set of songs to date, freaking out like hyperactive children unleashed at the funfair, swooshing down the helter skelter and giddey-upping on the carousel’s pastel-coloured horsies before making a beeline for the pirate ship as the sickly-sweet smell of toffee apples scents the air, a kaleidoscope of flashing lights, swirling neon colours and sugar kicks that bamboozles the senses and occasionally upsets the stomach. Built To Spill’s swirling, erratic indie rock shimmies alongside the occasional Make Up-style rock n’ roller, jubilantly topped by Mike Anderson’s love-it-or-loathe-it nasal hiccup, rapping and jiving away unselfconsciously about the joys of Mask toys, Van Halen II and whatever the hell it might mean to be a “œmilky white stallion”. This gloopy, treacly babble plops into our lap like the world’s biggest bowl of Lucky Charms, and while it’ll rot the teeth straight out of your head it sets the tongue tingling and has us all crossing our stubby fingers in the hope that Rapider’s parents never wise up to the soothing powers of Ritalin or that the boys never have their spirits crushed by the doldrums of puberty.
