After the nondescript whimper of Bluetip’s demise and Retisonic’s punch-pulling debut it might have been easy to write off Jason Farrell’s musical exploits and leave him to chopping up photographs and reassembling them origami-style for his ever-distinctive graphic design work. Small wonder then that Return To Me is such a balls-out rocker, stepping up to bat with so much cocksure energy it’s impossible not to get swept along with all the excitement. Trampling through a mix of elements that are both instantly familiar and impeccably fresh, the eleven tracks saunter past with more vim than they know what to do with. Wire’s choppy, inventive melodies sneak through the angular post hardcore of Jawbox, winding themselves up playfully with a sense of good time rock n’ roll thanks to Farrell’s sardonic sneer and the startling brashness of the whole delivery. Overall, a bright, invigorating blast of righteous fresh air sure to put the wind up so many saps having the cheek to call themselves rock bands.
