Freeform jazzpunk – ok own up, who has heard of this genre? ‘So what is it?’ I hear you asking? Well one man has a single turntable, the other has a set of drums. They face each other and well you can guess the rest. This is freeform scratching and beats and that’s all there is to it. Its certainly unique, it certainly is interesting but is it any good? That is a difficult one to say. I am used to a bit of experimental music but I have never owned any jazz records so I can’t use that as a reference. I was at the extreme computing show (www.xcom2002.com) in London last week(a hacker con basically) and there were 4 guys there offering you your own unique concert with the 4 of them sampling various bits with lots of white noise and beats which you chose from a menu (I had Sushi with Van Halen & whitesnake as extra toppings) – all burned for you on a CD with a hand drawn cover. Now that I thought was quite cool, a fun thing to do but it ain’t gonna replace my Fugazi records. Rock out is pretty similar. Ultimately this is really more of a novelty record. It is different and it is unique but I don’t think I am going to putting this on when I get home from work on a Wednesday night, I may put it on at 3am on a Sunday morning during one of those drunk record playing sessions with your friends saying “have you head this, it’s freeform jazzpunk you know”!!
