Rydell - Hard On The Trail - CD (2004)

Labels: Engineer
Review by: Damien Mills

So, i actually got this free with some stuff i ordered from Ignition Distro who seem happy to give away pretty much anything from their back catalogue with distro orders, fair play to ’em.

But yeah, the record, well i have a whole bunch of Rydell stuff knocking around, mostly splits and the like, i’ve always found them to be a pretty good summery kinda listen for whatever reason and this lp carries that on. It’s a bit less focused than the other stuff they’ve done at first but i’m thinking maybe it needs to be given more time, not that it is bad at all, as it’s not, just less immediate i guess, but then records like that often end up being the favourites right?

It also has an ever so slightly bizarre version of Don Henley’s ‘boys of summer’ on the end that sounds like they forgot how to play it but were scared to admit it to the guy recording, but that also has it’s charm and is actually probably one of the better versions of the many recorded recently.

To sum up, if i was recommending something of this band to someone new i’d definately say get ‘Per Ardua Ad Astra’ first as maybe it would help them appreciate this one a lot more….
