I’m probably not the best person to review this record as I haven’t heard a lot of Satyricon’s earlier records. I know there’s been a lot of speculation about them in all sort of metal magazines (in fact they even got a good review in NME) and a lot of internet action as well. This is on a weird label I don’t know who else is on it but I know its owned by EMI, which is strange seeing as how brutal Satyricon are.
If you haven’t heard them they play pretty brutal but simple (well recorded-at least on this album) black metal. They have a few rock n roll parts, brutal Burzum esque riffs (like the ending riff to track six-the ending to this track totally makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up), screaming vocals and pounding drums. I guess at times they are a little bit like Darkthrone mixed with At The Gates but a lot more commercial sounding (whilst not sounding pop or nu-metal).
This is a fucking amazing record, there are so many great metal records out at the moment but this is one of the best (especially for track six!).
