Scratch Tomorrow - In Darkness, PR Is No Choice - CD (2004)

Labels: Three Chord
Review by: Andy Malcolm

I quite like that cd title. Anyway. On the cover is a drawing of a punk kid in a Drive shirt. Minority

Blues Band did a Drive cover on their split 7″ with Blocko, so maybe Drive are the in band with

Japanese punk bands at the moment. I don’t really know why, I have a Drive LP (“Out Freakage”) which is

Ok, but not really that special. Scratch Tomorrow struggle themselves a bit at times on here, though

remain solid for the most part. The first track, “I Am Not A Nihilist” (me either) is not any good at

all though. It has some really horrible high pitched screaming that sounds stupid, mixed in with nicer

poppy punk bits. Those silly bits ruin it though. It runs straight into “Worst My Life” which is all rough

vocals and catchy melodic punk, done very well indeed. It’s a bit messy but overall pretty fine. It has

some iffy bits with guitar solos mind you. Anyway, the reason I got my buddy Simon to pick this up and mail it to me was

the infectious “I Am Who I Am” which I had an mp3 of. It’s a fucking class effort that has some nice

energetic guitar that is not too far removed from Hooton 3 Car or Brocolli. Good combo! It really

drives on at times, getting my toes tapping and the vocals are a all off-key and ace. Hurrah! The

lyrics are really interesting too, though a little difficult to explain. Sorry. They end on “Human

Being” which is another solid effort, although not amazing. It has some acoustic guitar on it which

sound a little odd.

This is not bad overall, though not my favourite thing from Japan that I have heard lately.
