Sense Field - Beautiful Beautiful - 7

Sense Field are back at it with their big emo rock action, The A side one of those shirt-tugging heartbreakers that they seem able to dash off without a second thought. Following the direction of the ‘Part Of The Deal’ EP that came out a while back, this is more straight ahead and rocking than their earlier releases for Revelation, with less of the interesting guitar twiddles weaving in and out of the songs. Melodic, anthemic and crashing, build ups and build downs, a different sound, but not necessarily a 100%change for the better. Then, of course, there are the vocals, Jonathan Bunch having one of those amazing, soaring voices that’s kinda hard to pull off without sounding gash, but he manages it.

Then it all goes horribly wrong, side B is just a non-entity, the kind of weakling puppy that really hasn’t got a hope. Twinkling guitars and average keyboards didn’t entirely dash my hopes from the off, but the subdued vocalss and sub-Get Up Kids vocal lines aren’t really what you want from these chaps, all too wishy-washy and pallid to the point that even the pleasant-enough acoustic guitars and Mogwai-esque wheedling noises at the end can’t save it from being sorrily average and a real bummer of a way to finish what could’ve been an out-and-out stonker of a 7″.
