Sense Field - Onelinedrawing - split - 7

Another corker from the Sense Field camp here, must say that I wasn’t unduly optimistic when it started off, but wham! Suddenly it all kicks in and things are just right. A mid-paced rocker with their new-found anthemic rock sound and Jonathan’s voice carrying what could easily be yet another Deep Elm suckfest off into the indie-emo stratosphere, all the na nana nana na na’s you could possibly want and even a tightpants falsetto part to boot. My only worry these days is that maybe there’s too much emphasis on Jonathan’s voice, the rest of the music not seeming as innovative and fresh as it used to be, more like a mere vehicle for the vocals.

Onelinedrawing is just Jonah from Far strutting his stuff. Now, Far were never my favourite band, having their odd moments on record and beng reasonably cool live, but they frequently seemed to just muss things up with ill-advised guitar parts or vocal lines, meaning I could never listen to an album without my finger wavering cruelly over the skip button. This one captures Jonah’s better side, not sounding too dissimilar to Sense Field themselves: emo rock with an indie tinge. Musically it’s nothing extraordinary, competent and pleasant but not likely to split worlds in half and hinging itself on Jonah’s frail, melancholic voice, which drifts gently but with more than a hint of desperation.
