Labels: Mother Stoat
Review by: Andy Malcolm
Latest offering from the Mo’ Stoat singles club arrived through the letterbox today. Here is a review.
Servo serve (ha ha!) up a cut from their fun debut album here called “Best Guess” and it’s an equally enjoyable melodic punk romp through the same fields as Hooton 3 Car and a poppier Blew. Opinion on this band is much divided, particularly over the chirpy vocals of Carolyn. Personally, I think they rock. So ner ner to you.
Backing the ‘vo up are a band called Gertrude, and you get a little scared before you even play it when you see their picture – 5 girls who look on the young side, and young girls in British bands tend to like stuff like Symposium and Nirvana. But wait a second, they open up with a really nice jangly, kinda indie emo sound. Then come in the very very English girl sounding vocals as she says some stuff. Then it all goes very weird and herky-jerky, with particularly batty sounding vocals, before calming down again and from there on in this song kind of veers between the two. God knows what they are trying to do, it’s a kind artsy indie punk track which I can’t make head nor tale of. All I can say is that they’ve definitely got a talent, and if you’re interested in hearing something a bit different, then this for you.
The Servo song will hopefully convince to buy their album if you haven’t already, and Gertrude will make you scratch your head. Worthwhile release.
