Seven Storey Mountain - Based On A True Story - CD (2000)

Labels: Deep Elm
Review by: Pete Burn

To be honest I never thought I would ever buy any Deep Elm releases, I find that whole scene to be rather predictable and uneventful. Anyhow, I had to make exception because I knew Seven Storey Mountain from their former works of genius on the Art Monk label. Their “Leper Ethics” album was an inspired piece of melodic hardcore encompassing a wide range of influences, creating something unique and new. “Based on A True Story” is the seven song prelude to their new full length which (if this is anything to go by) will also rule. Seven Storey Mountain take their cues from other power trios like Husker Du and Jawbreaker, relying on massive rock dynamics and an endless stream of melodies. The rhythm section feels more prominent on this release which shows common ground with DC groups like Jawbox and Fugazi. There are some really great lyrics on this record, my favourites being for the awesome tune “Politician”. It’s not often that more political subjects are addressed by bands in this genre without appearing contrived. So Seven Storey Mountain have proved that they are pros at this game, it’s just a shame they don’t get the attention they deserve amongst the sea of indie rock shit these days. My advice… burn your Get Up Kids records and introduce yourself to Seven Storey Mountain…… NOW.
