I was little indifferent to this band when I saw them play the other week but I have to say now that this is a GREAT demo tape. From the old man on the front cover with middle finger raised aloft to the four tracks of punk-rock that reside inside. Although “punk-rock” is not strictly 100% accurate in this case because these four tracks showcase a refreshing mix of ideas. Take ‘Second Guessing’. Not only is it truly excellent punk-rock but it features some superb Levellers-esq vocals and lyrics which have more to say than some bands manage in a whole album.
Then comes ‘Act Your Rage’. Its kind of ska-punk – but for once the ska actually sounds like it belongs in the song. It also boasts a terrific chorus too which is always good in my book. Meanwhile ‘Barfly’ shifts direction nicely by opening up with some nice mellow guitar before mutating into a tightly knit ball of fast paced guitars and dark vocals. Very impressive.
If this is the band at demo tape stage I’m almost salivating at the prospect of a full length album. And whad’ya know – their debut LP ‘Wreckage’ is on its way. I’m a happy man
