Shokei - Pete the Pirate Squid - split - 5

Labels: Grec Complete – Warsaw
Review by: Andy Malcolm

This record comes inside a 5.25″ floppy disk, and is therefore a 5″. The stupidest format

ever. Shokei have two tracks of kind of arty indie/emo with windy, mathy guitars and mixed

up vocals. Lots of different styles. Their second song is all swingy and sways back and

forth like Bells on Trike. Nice. I really like when they use the shouty vocals too, because

they sound like Spirit Assembly. This band sounds rather good, but because 5″ are so short,

I don’t really get enough of an opportunity to listen to them. Oh well.

Pete the Pirate Squid have a dorky name and a long meandering song of emo type stuff. They

have male and female vocals, and the song relies on its bassy nature with nice moments of

melody and explosion. Before almost being spoiled by the dodgy jazz at the end. Huh.

This is a really good split, but I enjoyed it so much that I wish it was a split 12″

instead, because I wanted to hear more of both bands. Daft 5″.
