Silver Scooter - The Other Palm Springs - LP (1999)

Labels: Peek-A-Boo Industries
Review by: Andy Malcolm

I’ve had this for a week or so now, but haven’t had the urge to play it that much. When I put it on again, and first song “Tractor Pull” plays, I start to wonder why. This is when Silver Scooter, a Texan all-boy indie pop / rock band, are at their jangly best. Not too slow, not too light, just fairly rocking indie, sort of like Norway’s Beezewax in a way. And they carry on in a pretty cool vein throughout the first side. Some songs are generally upbeat sounding, although I guess the lyrics aren’t at all really. It can get fairly bouncy and can sweep you a long, although they prefer a more melancholy, quiet sound most of the time. The drums are practically non-existant, and the singer is probably staring at the floor. Dead miserable at times, without resorting to whiny vocals, and also a little depressing. Yay! Yup, the first side of this LP I have no problem with whatsoever. Why haven’t I been playing this record?

Side two gets underway fair enough with an instrumental. And then carries on in the same vein as the other side. I don’t know, I guess I was just totally in the wrong mood when I listened to this before. I can see that it is definitely a mood album. Preferably when you are feeling sorry for yourself. Unhappy indie pop/rock for the easily scared. You know who you are.
