Six Foot Sloth - The Fifth Winter - CD (2003)

Labels: Cochon
Review by: Andy Malcolm

I am not totally in the mood to review this tonight as I have mostly been listening to noisier records, but I felt that whilst I have the time available I ought to get a review done as it’s been sitting in my pile for ages.

Six Foot Sloth play a pretty slow brand of indie, and it’s not too bad, it just doesn’t really stand out or really catch my attention like a band really ought to. Songs like opener “Luke” plod along with dual boy+girl vocals and a repeating piano. It’s just a tad droney and less than inspiring I am afraid. You can tell why they have the word sloth in their name anyway.

The vocals really remind me of something, maybe some Scottish indie band. Hmm. It’s also 50 minutes long, and I find it drags a touch for my tastes. I can listen to like, a Superchunk record that lasts 50 minutes, but they are a bit more upbeat than this. Or a really long electronica LP, but that tends to disappear into the background or become the backdrop to alcohol consumption and I end up getting lost.

Look, it’s not too bad, I even sort of enjoy it for 20 minutes or so but by the end I went off to chew my toenails or something. It lacks that necessary ingredient for me to get reeled in. There are some good tracks on here, but overall it’s simply nice without being great. Hardly a crime I suppose.

Also, this record has accordion on it.
