I have to profess this is not remotely the kind of thing I like I am afraid, so there is a disclaimer straight away. The UK’s Slingshot Around the Moon play that uber-cheesy indie rock style with off-key and wavery American-ised vocals, long build ups and atmospheric effects, easily comparable with Elliott and Jimmy Eat World. And on the first track they even throw in some screamy bits, but I don’t think they work that well. I am not saying cheesy music is bad, I was rocking out to Texas is the Reason’s “Blue Boy” in the car today, now there is a pure cheesy slab of rock greatness. I just find that this slice of cheese grates (geddit?!!?). It’s difficult to know what to say really, on the first track they are very proficient and diddle about with some neat spacey ideas with their guitars but alas I find it extraordinarily overblown and stadium-rock-esque. The b-side is a bit more Mineral-y with chuggy guitars and I much prefer it although it still bugs me with it’s fake endings and overly wrought vocals. The guitars though – right good.

I feel right bad doing a less than posi review because Jon who put this out is a super enthusiastic dude who has his heart in the DIY place, and I think any DIY record release is worth it, no matter what the music is like as in putting out your own releases you are sticking it to the fuckers who run radio and tv and want to dictate what you should and shouldn’t listen to. A good thing.

Well I guess is you like mid-period Jimmy, Deep Elm releases or latter day Elliott, you’ll be well into this single as they play the style brilliantly. But if you are a fuckwit like me who hates all bands like this unless they are as good as Christie Front Drive, you’ll probably not be into it. Fair do’s, and sorry Jon!
